Creative Community Life - Bee Creative - part1

Hello! This week we are talking to the lovely Honey Bee – as well as making her own range of accessories from upcycled fabrics, she is the creator of ‘Bee Creative’ a community initiative which she started in order to get people creating and is also one of the members of ‘CreativeBeeston’ whose aim is to help local creative people and their businesses. Today she is going to tell us about the craft workshops which she organises.

 

Bonjour! Cette semaine nous allons rencontrer ‘Honey Bee’ (l’abeille du miel) – bien que d’être fabricante de sa propre marque d’accessoires fait avec les tissus réutilisés, elle est la créatrice de ‘Bee Creative’ une initiative communautaire qui encourage les gens à créer.  Elle est aussi un des membres de l’association ‘Creative Beeston’ qui a pour but d’aider les créateurs dans la ville. Aujourd'hui elle va nous parler des ateliers créatifs qu'elle organise. (les sites sont en anglais)

So, for starters, please can you tell us how you came to be involved in the project?

 “I became involved in community workshops through a photography exhibition that I co-ordinated for a home grown charity that supports women who have been affected by postnatal depression/anxiety or any other maternal mental health problem (Open House Nottingham). I became involved with the charity via their fundraising events and had been supporting them for a couple of years. On the last day of the exhibition I organised some free taster sessions for craft workshops to publicise the workshops and conduct some research into what people wanted from a workshop. The response was really positive and this encouraged me to look for local crafters who would be willing to run a non-profit workshop. My main focus at that time was to be able to provide affordable beginner workshops, accessible to all and offer a variety of different crafts.”

Alors, pour commencer – pourriez-vous nous expliquer comment vous êtes-vous impliqué dans le projet ?

 « Ma participation dans les ateliers communautaires s’est lancé lors d’une exposition de photos que j’ai coordonnée pour une association caritative qui a pour but d’aider les femmes touchées par la déprime suite à la naissance (Open House Nottingham).  Lors de la dernière journée de l’expo, j’ai organisé des ateliers gratuits pour publiciser les ateliers et de découvrir les besoins des participants.   La réponse était très positive qui m’a encouragé à chercher des créateurs aux alentours volontaires pour animer les ateliers gratuitement.  Pour moi l’objectif était d’offrir les ateliers créatifs peu couteux et donc accessibles à tous. »

I’d also love to know what you feel are the benefits of the workshops both to yourself and to the participants?

“I ran the very first community workshop, we made origami butterflies that were to be part of a local art project in the Summer. I was pleased by the response and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of teaching something I knew to a wide variety of adults who had never done any origami before. As a Secondary Teacher who usually teaches Maths, but has lots of crafty hobbies, it was great to have the opportunity to teach something creative for a change.”

J’aimerais bien savoir aussi ce que vous et les participants ont pu bénéficier de ces ateliers ?

« Le premier atelier était animé par moi et on a fait des papillons en origami pour un projet d’art communautaire.  J’étais très contente par la réponse et j’ai bien aimé le défi d’animer cette séance avec un public de débutant dans l’art d’origami.  Je suis prof de maths dans l’enseignement secondaire et je bricole beaucoup dans mon temps libre, alors ça m’a fait beaucoup de plaisir d’enseigner quelque chose de créatif. »

“The participants get a lot out of learning a new skill and having the personal experience of being taught by a real person, rather than by watching a YouTube clip or trying to learn from the two dimensional diagrams in a book. I am also aware of the empowering aspect of learning and how any creative pursuit can act as a form of therapy, for those who need something positive to focus on in their life, due to their absorbing nature. Apart from all that, it is a wonderful opportunity for a group of adults to have fun, and forget about their daily responsibilities, if only for a little while!”

« Les participants ont aussi pu profiter de l’occasion d’apprendre avec un prof à côté, au lieu de suivre des explications dans un manuel ou sur YouTube.  Je me suis rendu compte combien apprendre une nouvelle compétence peut-être aider avec l’autonomisation pour les gens qui manquent de la confiance en soi.  La nature absorbante des tâches manuelles peut aussi avoir des effets thérapeutiques et donne quelque chose de positif dans la vie qui des fois on en manque.  Et en plus c’est une super occasion pour un groupe d’adultes de s’amuser ensemble et d’oublier leurs vies quotidiennes au moins pendant quelques heures. »
